St. George's Castle by night
St. George's Castle is one of the oldest buildings in the city dating back to the 6th Century. The castle was first fortified by Romans and served as a Moorish royal residence at one point in history. Much of the castle was destroyed during the course of time and natural disasters. Today, the castle still stands with 18 towers and a series of extension walls. The castle itself serves as a sanctuary of peace where visitors can come and enjoy the palace's gardens that feature geese, ducks and peacocks. Most spectacular, however, is the magnificent view own can observe from the castle towers that reach high above Lisboa.
