Cristo Rei Sanctuary

Overlooking Lisboa for all to see is the Cristo Rei Sanctuary (Christ the King Statue). The statue portrays Christ inviting all of mankind to come to him through love. Overall, the monument represents the love and acceptance of Christ by the Portuguese people. The towering statue stands on the south bank of the River Tagus where it was erected in 1959. In stretches 110 meters high to look over the city and the river. Supporting the pedestal of the statue are four arches that symbolize the four points of the compass and remind the people of the universal sovereignty of Christ the King.
